I love words. No surprise there, since I like reading, writing, and teaching English. I love studying and noting the way words come into a language. I love big dictionaries (I have two of them!) with etymological information on every word. I love seeing connections between words and learning word cognates. No surprise there, either: vocabulary is an important part of this class.
All of that is a prelude to what I want to say next: Yesterday I ran across some English loan words that are being used in Turkish, thanks to international sports:
- gol = goal. Spelled just like it's pronounced.
- ofsayt = The spelling of this one is interesting, but it fits, too.
- standart = Makes sense that it would end in "t," not "d."
- formülü = formula
- futbol
- beyzbol
- hentbol
