In this scene Juliet’s parents insist that she must marry Paris. What are the pressures Juliet is under and how does she react to them in this scene?Before you begin to write you should think about:
(a) Juliet’s worries and feelings as she speaks to her mother.
(b) The confrontation between Juliet and her father.
(c) The Nurse’s advice, and Juliet’s reaction.
(d) the increasing pressure Juliet feels by the end of the scene.
(e) How your knowledge of Juliet’s true situation makes you feel sympathetic at the beginning of the scene—and how her language makes you feel increasingly sympathetic.
a. In Scene 3.5, how does Juliet trick her mother? She is clearly saying one thing and meaning another. What is she really saying?
b. What does this arrange marriage suggest to you about male-female relationships in Verona at that time?
c. As Capulet speaks, the tone and style of his language changes. He begins (lines 126-138) confidently offering fatherly comfort to Juliet. Trace how his language changes, and see how, in his second speech (lines 141-5), he talks of her in the third person (she, her). What do you think is the effect of this change?
d. Read lines 3.5.204-242. What do you think of the Nurse’s advice? Do you think the Nurse recognizes Juliet’s irony or sarcasm when she says “Amen” and “Well, thou hast comforted me marvelous much”? In what way(s) does the Nurse’s advice add to your knowledge of her character?
