Homework for Thursday, 19 November 09

1. Write an 100-150 word obituary for Mercutio or Tybalt. You will have to use your imagination, but it should sound serious rather than silly. Post this on your blog. See below if you don't know how an obituary is worded.

2. Write 100-150 words: Whose fault is it that Mercutio dies? Post this on your blog.

3. Read the following article on the authorship debate:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shakespeare_authorship_question

Choose your position (and muster your ammunition)—is it Shakespeare, DeVerre, Bacon, Marlow, or someone else? Be prepared to discuss this (heatedly?) in class on Thursday.

Here is a typical obituary which is about 150 words:

John Earl Jones, 80 of Racine, Wisconsin, died Saturday morning, February 7, 2009 after a long illness. Funeral service will be held at 12:00 noon Thursday at Maple Funeral Home Chapel.

For most of his life, Mr. Jones was the proprietor of Jones and Sons, a hardware store in downtown Racine. Mr. Jones started the business in 1940. His two sons later joined him in the venture. Mr. Jones was active in the Racine Chamber of Commerce, the Racine Community Theater, and the Friends of the Public Library Association. Mr. Jones was also a member of the Racine Presbyterian Church, serving on its elder board. He was known to be civic-minded and served in various leadership capacities for the Chamber of Commerce. He is survived by his wife, two sons, two daughters-in-law, and four grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Racine Community Theater and/or Friends of the Public Library Association.
