Homework for Friday, 20 Nov. 09 -- for EVERYONE


Due Friday by class time:

A. If you haven't already done this, please post your obituary and your "whose fault for Mercutio's death" answers on your blog.

C. Read 3.5 and 4.1.

D. Write the answers to the following six questions. Turn them in tomorrow.

Scene 3.5:


  1. In lines 1-25 Romeo and Juliet have a disagreement. What is it about and how “serious” is it?


  2. Look at lines 1-64. Which group of two or three lines best sums up the feelings of (a) Romeo (b) Juliet about their parting?


  3. How does Juliet react to her mother’s news of the planned wedding? What is her father’s first response to the news of her refusal?


  4. Is Capulet’s outburst against Juliet expected, or unexpected?


  5. “I would the fool were married to her grave,” says Lady Capulet (line 140). Do you think she really means it? Explain. Explain why this is an example of dramatic irony.
Scene 4.1:


  1. Consider Paris’s character and personality. Is he too cold a character to attract Juliet? Explain why or why not.
